Travis Pickell

Assistant Professor of Theology & Ethics, George Fox University

Travis Pickell is Assistant Professor of Theology & Ethics and chair of the Department of Theology at George Fox University, where he teaches courses in Christian theology, Christian ethics, healthcare ethics, ethics of technology, and death and dying. He is also a faculty fellow in the George Fox Honors Program and co-director of the Program for Leadership & Formation, an grant-funded initiative to support whole-person formation and the cultivation of the virtues of wisdom, moral courage, and neighbor-love at GFU. Travis’s first book, Burdened Agency: Christian Theology and End-of-Life Ethics (University of Notre Dame Press, 2024), was a finalist for the Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion. He has also published journal articles in The Princeton Theological Review, The Bavinck Review, The Other Journal, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Studies in Christian Ethics, Christianity Today, Christian Scholars' Review, Church Life Journal, and the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics. Travis is formerly a Paul Ramsey Fellow with the Center for Bioethics and Culture (2019-2021) and research affiliate and advisory board member for The Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University's Institute for Quantitative Social Science. He is currently co-chair of the Christian Theology & Bioethics Interest Group at the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH). Pickell lives in Newberg, Oregon with his wife, three daughters, and their family dog, Lucy. He attends Newberg Friends Church, where he preaches regularly. As often as his schedule allows, he escapes to remote Oregon rivers with a fly-rod in his hand.
