Mary-Katherine Abdel-Ghany Stone
State Representative, Vermont General Assembly
Rep. Mary-Katherine Abdel-Ghany Stone currently serves as the Assistant Majority Leader for the Vermont House Democratic Caucus. She also co-chairs both the Vermont Future Caucus and the National Guard and Military Affairs Caucus. In 2025, she was named one of the Council of State Governments’ 20 State Elected Officials Under 40, recognizing emerging leaders from across the country. Born and raised in rural Alabama, Stone is the daughter of an Egyptian immigrant father and an Alabamian mother. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in interdisciplinary studies, focusing on human services and special populations, from the University of Alabama’s New College program. She later obtained a Master of Science in occupational therapy from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed postgraduate coursework in integrative medicine at George Washington University. Stone relocated to Vermont in 2016, drawn by the state’s natural beauty and strong sense of community. She worked as an occupational therapist at the University of Vermont Medical Center, where she also served as a co-leader of the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Employee Resource Group. Since 2020, she has served as an elected Justice of the Peace and has worked as a substitute teacher in local public schools. Her leadership has been recognized through fellowships, including the German Marshall Fund Transatlantic Inclusion Leaders Network Fellowship, the Dolores Huerta and Barbara Jordan Women’s Leadership Fellowship, the Vermont Council on World Affairs Global Leaders Fellowship, and multiple Future Caucus Innovation Lab programs. In May 2024, she was a keynote panelist at the Election Science, Research, and Administration Conference hosted by the USC Schwarzenegger Institute. Deeply involved in the arts, Stone has performed with Ballet Vermont and Lyric Theatre and enjoys creating stained glass. She resides in Burlington with her husband, Ryan, their adopted Aussiedoodle, and their son.
